The Kano school of Japanese painting was maintained by a long line of the Kano family, beginning with the first accepted member, Kano Masanobu, in the late 15th century. Centuries later Kano Toun, who painted Goats and Moon, established the school's Surugadai branch, one of many offshoots that would form during more than 300 years of painting for Japanese nobility.
