Born into an eminent samurai family, Sakai Hoitsu renounced his inheritance and became a Buddhist priest. In seclusion for the next 20 years, he devoted himself to the study of paintings by Ogata Korin, to whose sense of design Hoitsu's work is indebted. Here, the artist captured a momentary glimps both visually dazzling and startingly realistic.
